CUSTOMS TARIFF.
THE PROMISED REVISION. DEPARTMENTAL COMMITTEE APPOINTED. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, December 2. The initial step in connection with the promised revision of the Customs tariff was taken by the Government to-day in the appointment of a departmental commission which will investigate the matter and furnish a report to the Minister of Finance (the Hon W. Downie Stewart) before the end of June next. Mr G. Craig, Controller of Customs, will be the chairman of the commission. He will have associated with him Mr G. W. Clinkard (advisory officer of the Industries and Commerce Department), Mr J. H. Forrester (technical adviser and inquiry officer of the Customs Department), and Mr T. H. M. Tanner (examining officer of the Customs Department). The commission is invested with the usual authority to conduct any inquiries it deems expedient, and to examine all persons and documents likely to afford information on the subject. The report, setting out the compiissiou’s opinions, is to reach the Minister of Finance not later than June 30 next.
