A meeting of representatives of industrial bodies which subscribe to the funds of Newcastle Hospital discussed the appointment of Mr Coyle (of Wellington) as secretary. The meeting condemned the president for 'making the appointment, and asked him to resign. ■ The meeting also resolved to ask the Government to make an immediate inquiry into the affairs of the hospital and that the appointment of Mr Coyle be cancelled. (Received Dec. 2, at 11 p.m.) Fire in Messrs Newlands Bros.' bedding factory in the city caused damage estimated at £IO,OOO. STOWAWAY FROM NEW ZEALAND. SYDNEY, December 2. (Received Dec. 2, at 11 p.m.) Alfred Duncan, who arrived as a stowaway from New Zealand, failed to pass the dictation test, and was sentenced to one month’s hard labour pending his deportation to New Zealand. The police stated that Duncan had absconded from bail in New Zealand, where he was awaiting trial on charges of breaking and entering.
