Standard stock Model 70 Willys-Knight 6-cylinder Sedan, Serial No. 25838, left Canterbury Automobile Association’s Rooms, - Christchurch, at 8.1 p,m., Thursday, 4th November, 1926, under official control, and successfully accomplished the journey to Invercargill and return to Christchurch on top gear, without any use of intermediate gears, the complete journey of 780 miles taking 19 hours 52 mins, running time. 2. The trip was run over the recognised main roads south, via Ellesmere Bridge, Irwell, Dunsandel, and via Hinds, over Eangitata Bridge, Geraldine, and over Kilmogg and Mount Cargill, into Dunedin, then by main road to Invercargill. Return over same route. 3. The car was continually under official supervision, and all petrol used accurately recorded. 4. And that the following data is correct: — Time Engine ran continuously, 21 hours 38 minutes. Time spent in checking controls, road wheels stationary, engine running, 1 hour 46 mins. Total mileage recorded, 780 miles. Average speed throughout, deducting time controls, 39.9 miles per hour. Total amount of petrol used, 41 gallons. Timaro Starting in heavy rain at one minute past eight on Thursday evening the WiDys-Knight engine ran continuously until it had covered 780 miles in 19 hours 52 minutes the whole trip being done on top gear even the well-known gradients of the Kilmogg and Mt. Cargill were done on top both ways and an average speed of practically 40 miles an hour being maintained -though the car slowed down to observe all traffic regulations.
