An historical review of the growth of i number of departments of the Auckland University was given by Professoi J. P. Grossman *in a report to th< University College Council the other even ing (reports the Auckland Star). flu professor, who will relinquish the -chaii of economics at. the beginning of next year, when it will be separated from the '•-hail of history, stated that he was appointee in 1905 to have charge of the School o! Commerce, which began then with abou a dozen students. He was also lectures in economics and economic geography, vm in history and mental and morel- philosophy He was thus responsible for starting f hrei new departments. In 1922 a chair oi philosophy was established in Auckland, and Professor Grossman relinquished thaj part of the work. As to economics, dierj were four students in 1903, and this yeai there were 220. There were also four his tory students in 1905. and the number hac now increased to 180. At the School ol Commerce the attendance was now 140.
