HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT

STONEWORK CRUMBLING. COSTLY REPAIRS NECESSARY. (Pres* Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, November 11. (Received Nov. 12, at 9 p.m.) A startling Parliamentary Paper discloses that £1,000,000 is required to carry out necessary repairs to the Houses of Parliament in the next 12 years. Twenty-five per cent, of the decorative work must be renewed chiefly 6wing to the effects of impure atmosphere upon the magnesian limestone from Yorkshire, which the architect, Sir Charles Barry, was forced to use, though the defects of the quarry were well known. The original cost of the Houses of Parliament was only £2,000,000. A. and N.Z. Cable.
