REMARKABLE ESCAPE

LOCK PICKED WITH SPOON. ALLEGED THIEF’S CUNNING. LONDON, September 13. James Edmond, aged 74, who had been committed for trial on a charge of stealing the Alarchioness of Crewe’s jewels, valued at £I7OO, while she was visiting Cowes in 1924, and also some jewels at Salisbury, valued at £lO, made an extraordinary escape from the Windsor Alagistrate’s Court. He was allowed the freedom of the corridor, owing to the heat. He picked the lock with a spoon with which he had eaten his dinner, walked into the public part of the building, and left by the magistrate’s door. The police description says he is wearing heliotrope-striped pyjamas under Ms suit. Edmond was originally arrested in the grounds of Windsor Castle by Sir John Hanbury-Williams, Alarshal of the Diplomatic Corps, and charged with stealing property valued at £SO from Sir John’s rooms in Henry lll.’s Tower.
