(Peb United Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND, September £B. Mr W. R. M'Keun, S.M., upheld tho petition to declare tho election of the Howick Town Board void. Two nominations had been wrongfully rejected by the returning officer, as tho deposits of £3 for each had not been lodged. This, the Magistrate stated, was only necessary in tho cases of a borough and a city council. A fresh election will be held. Colonel A. R. L. King-Mason, of tho Indian Army, who was a passenger by the Mamma, says that many army officers speak of coming to Now Zealand on retirement, though their wives do not like the, idea of doing their own housework. WAIROA, September 28.
In the Police Court this afternoon several undesirables were sentenced. Adam M'Keown, with a long list of previous convictions, received three months’ hard labour tor obscene language and disorderly behaviour, and Henry Newman one month on a charge of being idle and disorderly. Frank Thornton and George Burns each received one month’s imprisonment for being drunk and disorderly. MARTON, September 28.
Barton’s grocery shop, which is situated on the main thoroughfare, was entered by burglars during the night. The proprietor found the rear premises lighted and tho back door open this morning. The cash register had been unsuccessfully tampered with. The sum of 21s was removed from a shelf. It is not known whether any stock was stolen. PALMERSTON N., September 28. A Native named Jimmie Woreta, who escaped from the Terrace Gaol, and was re-arrested last week at Dannovirke, pleaded guilty to charges of theft and issuing forged cheques. When making his way through tho district Wereta called at a Kairanga settler’s house and stole cheque forms, and then defrauded a storekeeper and a hotelkeeper. He _ also defrauded a taxi driver at Woodville. Ac cused was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court at Wellington. CHRISTCHURCH, September 28. The Conciliation Council to-day referred the dispute brought by the New Zealand Federated Ironmasters’ Association against the Wellington Metalworkers Assistants Union and others to the Arbitration Court. It was stated that the dispute affects Taranaki, Wellington, Marlborough, Nelson, Canterbury, Westland, Otago, and Southland. Tbe unions oppose a Dominion award, asking for local awards. A meeting of the creditors in the bank rupt estate of Harold Edwin George, a farmer of North Canterbury, was called for this morning, but lapsed for want of a quorum. The financial statement showed that bankrupt’s total debts amounted to £BOBB 13s sd, all of which were unsecured. There were no assets. The principal on secured creditor was the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Can terbury (Ltd.), £BOOO.
