THE WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.
TO THE EDITOR. Slß,—From the doings of the Waikouaiti County Council concerning the bridge over the Waitati Stream, on the road leading to the Purakanui Cliffs, one is almost led to believe that bridges are not necessary. This bridge was built somewhere about 60 years ago, when there were only four residents in that part of the Blueskin Riding. The locality has now become a favourite seaside resort with somewhere about 60 residences—mostly those of town people with cars, I admit; but not all. Now, if a bridge w;as necessary when there were only four residents, surely it is necessary now. | The county collects a little in rents in that part, but does not spend any on it. What has been done in recent years to the road has been done by others. Yet, when a new bridge is asked for, the council jumps up and says, “Find £IOO amongst you and we will see what can be done. If you don’t ! wo will close the bridge, which has been unsafe for traffic for five years, and was recently repaired with a few manuka rads and some old planks of another bridge.'' Of course, the bridge is closed after the doctors have been out from town and had their stay, and are away again. Some of the members suggested faking the decking off. A very brainy idea. Surely it is to the benefit of all concerned, not only the Waikouaiti County Council but tradespeople ns well, to have people from town conn out and build and therefore they should lr encouraged, not disgusted. I hope to sc a more go-ahead council in the near future —I am, cte.. Ratepayer. Waitati, September 27.
