TRADE WITH GERMANY. An optimistic view of trade prosnecta between Germany and Australia was taken by the master of the German steamer Freiburg (Captain B. Voss), who reached Melbourne on September 13 from Hamburg. His chip carries general cargo for Australian ports. “There is a groat difference between the cargoes offering immediately after the end of the war. and the cargoes we are carrying now,” said Captain Voss, “I was in command of the Hanau, the first German steamer which visited Australia after tho signing of tha Peace Treaty. That vessel had in her holds only a few hundred tons of merchandise, but' w u have 1900 tons of cargo for Molbourna alone. The admittance of Germany to the League of Nations should permit a further improvement in trade relationship® The principal exports from Germany to Australia at present are pianos and other musical instruments, toys, motor cars, and genera manufactured goods.” The Freiburg is a comparatively ptpumer. having been launched in 1923, at Hamburg. The voyage from Australia to Hamburg and back was completed in three months and 14 days. NEW BRITISH OIL TANKER. A trial trip of more than usual interest took place early' in July, when the oil tank steamer British Inventor left the yard ot tlw builders, Palmer® Shipbuilding and Company (Ltd.), of Jartow-on-Tyne, to undergo her sea trials, which were earned out with remarkably successful results. I" 1 * vessel was originally laid down by the builders to the order of Sir Joseph Isherwood, Bart., and prior to completion was purchased by the British Tanker Compuny (Ltd.). The British Inventor is the first vessel to he built on the ’brackotless system, devised by Sir Joseph W. Ishot wood, and developed by him in collaboration with his son, Mr William Isherwood. The "brackctle.w” system, as is now well known, is the Isherwood or longitudinal system (under which the bulk of the world 8 tanner tonnage is constructed), with this striking departure—that the whole of the brackets connecting the longitudinal frames at the decks, sides, bottom, and centreline to the transverse bulk-heads are eliminated- I"** number of such brackets in this particular vessel vould have bean about 2500. The British Ir-ventor is a vessel of 430 ft by 67ft oin by 34ft 3in, with a deadweight carrying capacity of about 11,000 tons, and is designed for » speed of 11 knots. On trial Hi knots was obtained.
