A movement has been made in the Putaruru district for the esetablishment of a lucerne farm (reports the New Zealand Herald), the intention being to grow lucerne for sale as pressed hay, cui chaff, etc., and later possibly for the production of seed. Five hundred acres of land hive been secured on the Puaruru-Arapuni road, and already about 30 acres have been planted. ,It is the intention to plant about 400 acres by next year. Lucerne growing has been carried on successfully on small areas in the Putaruru district for some years, and the arrangements made to conduct it on so largo a scale on commercial linos shows that the people concerned have great faith in the capabilities of the soil for raising this valuable crop. The success of the venture will have an important, influence on the development of dairying not only about Putaruru, but throughout the great pumice areas toward Tanpo, because, if lucerne can he raised profitably it will stimulate dairy farming in a marked manner as lucerne is invaluable as a succulent fodder for milking herds in rummer, and lucerne hay in combination with roots cannot be excelled for winter feed.
