TOWN PLANNING.
DIRECTOR APPOINTED. (F.bom Gob Own Ooebxbpondbkt.) WELLINGTON, September 24. Mr R. B. Hammond, who has been appointed Director of Town-Planning, is a New Zealander who has gained prominence in the last three or four years as the winner of the Orakei (Auckland) and Lower Hutt town planning competitions. He made a special study of town planning in England, where he took a course at the University College, London, under Professor Adshead. Mr Hammond was largely concerned in the framing of the Town-Planning Bill which was passed in the recent session of Parliament, and was a member of the commission set up by the Government this year to report upon the improvement of the Native villages at Ohinemutu and Whakarewarewa. The Act provides that the director shall be appointed for a term not exceeding five years, but that he shall be eligible for reappointment at the expiration of the term of his office. He is to be a raemer of the Town-Planning Board, and, in addition to other duties, he » authorised to certifv the plans of subdivision of land for towns, as provided for in the i,and Act.
