HOTEL AND RESTAURANT WORKERS.
NEW UNION SECRETARY. PRESENTATION TO MR G. S. THOMSON. A special meeting of the Hotel and Restaurant Workers’ Union was held in the Trades Hall last evening for the purpose of ejecting a secretary to succeed Mr G. S. Thomson. The president (Mr A. G. Trimnell) was in the chair. The applicants for the position numbered 30, of whom 10 were nominated. After two ballots had been taken Mr M. J. Kdl.v was elected with a clear majority of 37 votes. , , , Mr G. S. inomson, who acted as_ returning officer, then declared Mr Kelly elected as from October 1. Mr Kelly thanked the meeting and expressed the hope that lie would have the union's full support. The meeting then closed. , . , Then followed a social and dance, at which the retiring secretary (Mr Thom son) was presented by the president with a handsome illumine 1 address, the inscription on which dealt with the painstaking manner in which Mr Thomson had carried out his duties and increased the membership of the union, which was in a bad way numerically and financially when he took omce in January, 1025 liie president referred to the good work Mr Thomson had done under adverse conditions, anu said the union regretted very much that ia-health demanded that he should relinquish the secretaryship. Other speakers during the evening were Messrs G. H. Liphtfoot, A. C. Dixon, and M. J. Kelly. Mr Thomson, in thanking the meeting, assured those present that his interest in the union did not cease with his retire ment from the position of secretary.
