MORNINGTON TRAMWAYS.

TO THE EDITOR. Slit. —The loiter in to-day's issue from Mr U Lawrence deals with a very sore point in connection with Mornington residents. The fares are undoubtedly too high compared with those charged elsewhere, whilst the charges on the Maryhill line and the buses are most unjust. The whole question of Moinington fares calls for immediate attention on the part of the 'train ways Committee. There is another matter widen I consider is very urgent and that is the need of more light at the main tramway terminus, Mornington. A few nights ago a man was knocked down by a car and 1 understand that it was only due to the prompt action of the driver that lie was not killed. There is a great deal of traffic at the terminus in the evenings and it is carried out under a light that is altogether inadequate. Why should not the tramway terminus bo sufficiently lighted to prevent accidents? Another matter that 1 would like to mention is the disgraceful state of the Mary hill line waiting-shed at the Mornington end. It is evidently a junk heap, disgusting from every standpoint. The shed itself, instead of being properly fitted up as a waiting room, is at present used to store wire rope and is piled around with old junk iron, and everything else of the same kind. 1 make bold to say that, if a private firm were to do this kind of thing, it would very soon he dealt with by the municipal authorities. This Maryhill ter minus in its present disgusting conditions was a particularly sore point during the Exhibition period, when so tnanv visitors travelled on the Maryhill line. Why is it that our waiting sheds arc modelled on the latest patterns of pigstyes instead of being artistically constructed with red tiled roofs such as those in Wellington and elsewhere? The plea of poverty - can no longer be urged in view of last year's profit? on the tramway business. Is it not time that some effort wa? being made to impart beauty to the outstanding feature? of our town and suburbs?—and certainly a tram way terminus must always be an outstand ing place. I trust that the Tramways Com mittee will see its way to look into these matters and give Mornington the fair play that it has so long waited for, and is so fully justified in expecting. I am, etc., • A Morxixgtox Resident. July 19.
