TRIAL AT AUCKLAND. OTAGO PLAYERS PROMINENT. (Feb United Association.) AUCKLAND, July 7. Bright flashes of individual play saved from drabness the League trial match between Auckland and a combined team drawn from the rest of New Zealand, at Carlaw Park this afternoon. The combined team quickly gained a good lead and had a shade the better of the play throughout, winning by 28 points to 21. The Auckland team, however, was only at about half-strength, as seven leading players were dropped to allow others to show their merit. The attendance was about 4000. The outstanding player on the field was undoubtedly Mount (West Coast), He worked In splendidly with the forwards and backs alike, and mado Innumerable openings. Menzies (South Auckland) was another to show first-class form, and In the Auckland vanguard Clarke, Townsend, and O'Brien were the best. The final trial matches in connection with the selection of the League team for the tour of Great Britain will be played at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when the Probables will meet the Possibles, and A and B teams will play a curtain-raiser. The teams are as follows: — Probables. —Full-back, Dufty (Auckland) ; three-quarters —Sanders (Canterbury), Desmond (Wellington), Little good (Auckland) ; five-eighths—-Kirwin (Auckland) and Webb (Auckland); half-back, Wilson-llall (Canterbury); forwards —Vivian (Canterbury), Carroll (Wellington), Herring (Auckland), Mason (Canterbury), Singe (Auckland), Avery (Auckland, captain).
