NOTES. There was a sharp frost in evidence at Wingatui yesterday morning, but a strong sun soon dispersed the superficial evidence of the visit. The outside of the course was again placed at the services of trainers, and the going fias been considerably cut up in the narrow strip in which the horses have been galloped. The past three days’ fine weather has, however, considerably improved the going, but it will be on the bolding side for the meeting, as the frost is sure to prevent it from drying up. The tracks were busily occupied from about 7.45 to 10.30, and a very large number of horses was on the scene of action. Eaton Bells was allotted a lenient task, and Bonena beat Vogue over six furlongs in 3.30. Palencia worked a couple of circuits at half pace. Marmont travelled over seven furlongs In 3.45. Kipling did good striding work over three circuits, and was followed by Brightling. Chickwheat, and Adjutor, who were each restricted to easy pacing. ’ Chickwheat and Rapier are credited with running five furlongs on the previous morning in 1.11, the best gallop recorded prior to the meeting. Pamplona worked half pace over three circuits. Spearmald beat French Bell over five furlongs In Imin 15sec. Deucalion put up a good gallop by travelling over seven furlongs in Imin 40sec under a light weight. Sun Up was shaken up by a light pilot when reeling off half a mile in 55 3-ssec—-the sprint of the morning. Bonaki finished in front of Tholomon at the end of half a mile in 57 3-ssec. Nightraid, Uncle Bob, and Cartoon Jumped the double In good style, and then came the last six furlongs of a couple of circuits in Imin Sfisec —a good working gallop. Circulation sprinted over a short dis-

Mountain Xjion was not fully extended when showing the way to Soltoe over seven furlongs in limn 44sec. Apache and Irish galloped over the same ground in Imin 44 2-ssec. Tione came on from King Sol when coneluding ths last five of a six-furlong gallop in Imin 12soc. , Sprinkler required 58 2-ssec to cover half 1 Kilfane was going better than Full Swing at the end of seven furlongs in Imm 41 S-ssec. They began at the mile post. Baldowa covered more ground than Bugle Note before they concluded five furlongs in Imin 11 2-osec. Bugle Note cut the corner, but they were both fimshand Valdamo schooled well over two hurdles. Barrister then joined Vice Grand in a school over the fences. They crossed two fences and the water jump in good style, but both ran oft at the first of the double, apparently because they were not kept awake to business. Barrister afterwards refused the second leg of the double, and dropped his rider. Happy Mac and Tigerland both shaped well in a school over the fences. Tigerland, however, dwelt at the double. Roman Archer went six furlongs in Imin

Cphir was covering more ground than Bonomel when negotiating five furlongs in Imin ISsec. _ „ . ... Ecuador and Queen Balboa ran down nail a mile in 57-4-Ssec. Ross arrived from Oamaru with Heather Lad yesterday afternoon. Palencia has a rather laboured action, and he may tire over a long course in sticky going. . , Whipcord was once considered a good stayer, and the fact should be a great deal in his favour if he has had sufficient preparation for a long journey over coun'Mountain Lion was not fully extended in his gallop yesterday morning, and seemed keen to improve the pace. Baldowa seems in good shape, and ne pave awav a lot of err to Bugle iO 0 when he led up the rise and the latter onlv got to him by cutting off the corner at 'the home turn. Both horses finished on well at the end of the gallop. Sun Up put up the best sprint of the morning at Wingatui yesterday. He was fairly wide out, but kept busy when coming up the running. Clontarf also put up a smart gallop, as he was under a pressure all the way when going with Miss Winkie, who was covering more ground than the gelding and coming on at ttiD finish. Still there is no aoubt that Uontarf went a good gallop. _ rr Judging by the manner in whicn lilllane shaned in his gallop with Full Swing yesterday morning he is not altogether a bacK number. He is so leniently handicapped that if in anything .like racing shape should pick up a stake again. . Overdrawn galloped freely m a sprint over half a mile yesterday morning. H§ pulls a good deal, and this will not help his chance over a mile and a-had. unless there is a fairlv strong boy with good hands on top. Well ridden, he will give a good account of himselfGeranial put up a smart gallop at \\ ingatui yesterday morning. She travelled over more ground than Deucalion, who had galloped seven furlongs a few minutes before the Southland mare appeared. Providing a horse has pace on. the water jump is one of the easiest obstacles cn the Wingatui cross-country _ course. Nevertheless, it has a fascination for the crowd which is apt to congregate near it. and, with an utter lack of consideration block the view from the lawn and stands. This year there will be a double attraction to ilraw the crowd, as the Otago_ Steeplechase will start close to the water jumn. but it is to be hoped that spectators on the stands will not be denied a vie" 1 bv those who like a close look at the jump. , Applications for trainers' and riders licenses must reach the secretaries of the various district committees not later than Mondav next. The California mare Fireblight, who ran second to Tuki in the Grand National Steeples, is reported to be shaping well in her work. . , , The TC'lbroriev maiding Phoenix Park has hpen sold to a West Australian owner. Bo”tbland will be strongly represented at ih e Dunlin winter meeting, as there are row over 30 southern horses located at Wingatui.
