BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. Mr W. J. Sheat was elected chairman of the Bruce County Council yesterday, and at the opening ot the council meeting he welcomed the new member for the lokomairiro riding—Mr J. Lockhart. Others present were Messrs H. M. Driver, J. Clark, T. Johnson, D. M'Gregor, A. Renton, V. Wilson. A. King, W. Bell, U. Gardyne. It was left to any members of the council in town to form a delegation to the annual pre-sessional meeting of the Otago Expansion League, of which meeting the secretary (Mr W. B. Steel) advised the council by letter. The Town Clerk (Dunedin) wrote advising the council of a conference of local bodies to go into the question of heavy traffic license fees and their apportionment amongst the bodies affected.—The chairman and Cr Clark were appointed delegates. An application from throe Kaitangata ratepayers for metal to cover 130 yards of road, the petitioners to do the work free of charge, was granted. The chairman’s honorarium for the ensuing year was fixed at £6O. The annual report and balance sheet of the county were approved and passed for signature by the chairman. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. Work generally throughout the county has been hold up on account of weather conditions during the month. Balmoral No. 1 Riding.—Maintenance grave] has been put down on the Waita buna bridge to Tuapeka Mouth road. Balmofal No. 2 Riding.—Maintenance metal lias been put down on the Gooseneck and Blackburn flat roads, and grading done on Burns Hill. One culvert of 9in pipes has been put in on Blackburn to Mount Stuart road, near Clarkson’s, and the gravel graded in on the Cemetery road, North Balclntha. Crichton Riding.—Potholes on the Lakeside road have been filled with gravel, and the gravelling portion of the contract at Currie’s Creek has been completed. Mount Stuart Riding.—Scrub has been cut back on the road through Canada Reef and some surface work done on the road. Tokomairlro Riding.—Formation and metalling has been done on the hill road at Bartlett’s; maintenance metal put down on the Black Bridge, Moneymore and OneTree Point roads, and the bridge erected at Hassett’s ford. This bridge will be ready for traffic when the approaches are made up and gravelled. A Din culvert on the Bush quarry road is too small to carry the water, and should be replaced by an ISin culvert. Wnihola Riding.—Surface work has been done on Taieri Bench road and on the hill roads around Waiholn. Metal has been put down on Chatham street and on the Gully road. Kaitangata Riding.—No progress was made at the meeting between the members for Kaitangata and Matau Ridings and Morrison Bros, regarding the metalling required on the Kaitangata to Wangaloa road. A culvert of Din pipes has been put in at Coal Point, and surface work has been carried out on various roads in the riding. Matau Riding.—Maintenance metal and gravel have been put down on the Swamp road, and a ditch cleaned out on the Stir-ling-Lakoside road. Inch Clutha Riding.—Maintenance metal has been put down on the road betw"~ the bridge and Centre road upstream, and the gravel on the road downstream graded in Clarendon Riding.—Surface work has been done on various roads and maintenance metal put down on the road near Berwick. MAIN HIGHWAYS. Dunedin to Invercargill.—Maintenance metal has ben put down In Balmoral No. 2, Matau and Crichton Ridings; also gravel in oTkomairlro, Mount Stuart, and Waihola Ridings. Clarksville to Alexandra.—Gravel from Taratu has been put down between Clarksville and the Main Line, and Manuka Creek gravel between Manuka and Round Hill. The gravel on both highways has been graded in during the month. Twenty-seven men have been e~icloyed on the main highways, and have worked a total of 13 days during the month. The report was adopted and the paysheet passed for payment.
