Mr A. Moritzson returned to Dunedin yesterday irom Sydney. Sir George Fenwick left for the north yesterday to attend a meeting of the frisons Board. Dr Orawshaw, District Health Oflicer, who has been visiting Auckland, returned to Dunedin last night. Dr D. T. Wylie, of Palmerston North, and Ur" Eardley Fenwick, of Wellington, arrived in Dunedin by the express train last night. , Mr A. S. Cookson (secretary of the Otago Employers’ Association) returned last nignt from the north. Mr J. Hutchison returned to Dunedin last night from a visit to the north. Mr F- A. Cutten returned to Dunedin by yesterday's express from limaru. Mr Robert Cuttle, agent for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. at Palmerston, will leave Dunedin by the second express to-day en route to Sydney. A Press Association message from Wellington reports that Captain Henry Johnson, harbourmaster at Wellington from 1895 to 1915, when he retired, died yesterday morning at the ifgo of 79 years. Mr P. S. Anderson (ex-president of the Returned Soldiers’ Association) will represent the Dunedin branch at the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association conference in Wellington next week. At the meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council yesterday a motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr Wm Soutar, who had been for many years a member of the council. The members acknowledged the motion by standing in silence. , „ . Mr Frank Tate (Director of Education, Victoria), who investigated the position of post-primary education in New Zealand, has been appointed to lead a Royal Commission which will inquire into educational matters in Fiji. . Mr and Mrs J. O’Sullivan, of Gore, who are shortly moving to Oamaru, were entertained by a large number of fripnas at Gore on Tuesday evening (reports our correspondent j. Mr «J. Brownlie, on behalf of those present, presented Mr O’Sullivan with a travelling rug and a set of stainless cutlery. Mr W- Cox spoke briefly of the many good qualities of their guests, and expressed the regret felt at their departure from Gore. Mr 0 Sullivan suitably replied. A Press Association telegram from Hokitika says that a large gathering of citizens entertained Mi and Mrs Ihomas Duff on the occasion of Mr Duff retiring owing to ill-health from the Westland County Council and other local bodies after 25 years service. The Mayor (Mr Perry) presided. Many congratulatory speeches and expressions of regret were made at the retirement of Mr Duff, and several valuable prosentations were received from citizens. The death occurred at Gore yesterday morning of Mr George Matheson a wel 1known printer (reports our correspondent). The deceased was born at Port Chalmers, and received his education in North Otago. Ho started work at Balclutbu on the mechanical staff of the Clutha Leader, and later accepted a position on the staff of the Oiagc Dailv Times. He subsequently purchased an ‘interest in the Southern Standard at Gore. Eventually he sold his interest in that paper and went into retirement until he recommenced business as a printer in partnership with Mr Dewar Tne late Mr Matheson was actively associated with many public organisations, and in his earlier days was a keen footballer and lawn tennis nlavef. A serious illness overtook him a fortnight ago, and he gradually sank and passed away at the age of 62 years. He is survived by three sisters and one brother. The funeral is to take place tomorrow.
