DUNEDIN ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.

Thirty-nine years is a lengthy period in the life of a musical society, but age lias not diminished the vigour and activity of the Dunedin Orchestral Society, which will inaugurate the 391 h year of its existence with its first concert of the season in His Majesty’s Theatre on Monday next. The programme has been chosen with discrimination, and with the exception of one composition, all the items are by wellknown composes. The new piece, to be introduced is by a composer unknown to Dunedin audiences, this being the first time it will have been performed in New Zealand. In “A Night on Mount Chauve” (M. Moussorgsky) the composer depicts with quaint and characteristic melody the doings of the evil spirits which legend says inhabit the mountain. Schubert’s Fifth Symphony will be repeated in deference to numerous requests. A selection from Sullivan’s “Tho Gondoliers” will embrace many of the well-known airs from this delightful and favourite opera. The “Three Dances from Henry VIII” (Edward German) are always popular, and in them the composer has vividly clothed in musical expression dance forms that have been seldom surpassed. To lend further variety to the programme and so cater for the tastes of all, the overture “Son and Stranger” (Mendelssohn) and the march from “Tannhauscr” (Wagner) will also he included. The assisting vocalists will bo Miss Loma Smith and Mr John T. Leech. Miss Smith is a young singer of promise whose appearance will he awaited with interest. Mr Leech has not recentlv made concert appearance, and his return will be welcomed. The box [dan will open at the Bristol on Friday morning for subscribers, and on Shturday for non-subscribers.
