(From Our Own Correspondent.) LAWRENCE, May 26. the wßlather. Alb signs of the recent snowfall have completely disappeared from the distnet. With the exception of a few cold showers and easterly winds the weather has been good and quite unlike that expected m winter. The fanners who had gram out have had. during the last week, a good opportunity of getting it in, and.it is doubtful if there is any now unstacked in the district. YOUNG HELPERS’ LEAGUE. The Young Helpers’ League connected with the Lawrence High School held its annual sale in aid of Dr Barnardo a Home in the Technical School on Wednesday last. Th» sale realised £25 11s fid, and, with £7 13s sd, the proceeds of box collections, a total of £33 4s lid will be forwarded by the secretary to the home. LAWRENCE FARMERS’ UNION. The monthly meeting of the Lawrence branch of the New Zealand farmers Union was held in the Council Chambeis on Saturday night. Mr H. C. Hall, president, occupied the chair. A remit was forwarded from the Lawrence branch to the Provincial Conference, which will be held during show week, to consider the present method of levying a rate on property for hospital and charitable aid boards. tt was suggested that the Government should make a grant from consolidated fund, so that the burden would fall upon everyone, and not on the few as at the present time. The proposed scheme of forming a company with a capital of £25,000 to build •aleyards so that the farmers could operate if the market were overstocked, was held over for further consideration. The delegates appointed to interview stock a E® nt ® concerning the public saleyards will attend to this important business during the currency of Snow Week and report to the next meeting of the union. The members present discussed the prospect Of electric power coming to the district in the near future, and expressed satisfaction at the definite assurance that the district was going to be reticulated by the Otago Power Board. TUAPEKA AND WAITAHUNA PARISH.

The annual meeting of Tuapeka and Waitahuna parishioners was held in tire schoolroom on Friday last. report showed that the chief event in the year was the consecration of the new church on August 23. The Rev. A. L. H. Button left at the end of July to take charge of St. Peter's, Caversham, and the Rev. James Morland came from the . 1 evict Church early in September. During the rear the Greenfield members presented the vicar with a new car. The balance sheet of the new building mas regarded as very satisfactory. LAWRENCE BOROUGH COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Borough Council was held in. the Council Chambers on Monday. Mr oimpson, the Mayor, presided. A letter was received from W. x>. Steel, secretary of the Otago Expansion League, stating that the annual presessional meeting of the league with the local members of Parliament would be held on June 4, and he invited members of the council to be present.—-Accepted. A telegram was received from Mr A. L. Aldridge, engineer of the Otago lower Board, informing the council that the draft petition was in Wellington tor apPl 's! Fletcher, solicitor, wrote notifying the transfer of sections 8-9 and 44-4.1, block XLII, town of Lawrence, to J. A letter was read front the District Public Trustee concerning the rates on the property in the estate of the late Margaret F. Clarke. . H. N. Winmill, draper, wrote asking permission to erect a hoarding in Irvine street on Messrs Knight and M Intosh s property.— Granted subject to the usual conditions. ... „ A letter was received from Burrow s Bros., Gore, advising that they could not supply oak of the size wanted for the Peace Gardens. ■ fl , , A letter was read’ from the 1c Awavnntu Borough Council requesting information concerning the working and advantages of lire boards in boroughs Clerk instructed to reply. The Balclutha Borough Council wrote advising of the conditions and charges imposed by the council concerning kerbside petrol pumps. • ■ .. A letter was received from the Hamilton Borough Council submitting a series of resolutions passed by that body on motor traffic and taxation. The council decided to support the Hamilton Council’s resolutions. . , , „ T Frbo A letter tvas received from J. Laic, drawing attention to the late Dr Halley s monument and its precarious .position, and suggesting that the council should put it in order in recognition of his puhhc services given ungrudgingly in the caily R. Smyth wrote stating that the council’s terms were quite impossible ot acceptance, and that he had ® evcl connections between the mining claims at Wetherstones and the corporations dam and water races. The Works Committee reported that the culvert in Beaumont road was finished and that gravelling on the Mam Highwaj was being carried out. The Cemetery Committee reported on various works, and it was instructed to repair Dr Halley’s monument and also to paint and renovate the tool house in the cemetery grounds. The Mayor and Cr I'raser weie appointed delegates to the conference ot local bodies, to be held in Dunedin on June 1, on motor lorry regulations, etc. The Finance Committee was instructed to make arrangements about obtaining signatures to the petition for electric light when the petition was received. \ deputation of six citizens who arc special water supply users waited upon the council, complaining of the lack of pressure from its . water supplv and asking some redress. The opinion was that the main was corroded, and that the water flow was restricted. The Water Commit* tee was instructed to get au estimate of the cost of putting in new mams. Accounts amounting to £lO9 were passed for payment. , , ~ . , The Mayor made feeling reference to the death of cx-Cr Blair, and the clerk was instructed to convey the council s sympathy to the deceased’s relatives. BOROUGH WATERWORKS. When the Borough Council purchased its waterworks it was subjected to the end of March to a lease held by a mineowner at £l6O per annum. When the lease terminated the former lessee wrote to the council asking for the use of the dam and certain races for a time. The question of cost had not to enter in the contract; Practically the council was asked to give the use of its property for nothing. The council decided to make the following offer: —That the Phoenix dam and races be leased for £4 per week, the lessee to keep the dam and races in good order and repair and to put into the borough reservoir sufficient water to supply the town as formerly. The offer submitted by the council was not accepted.
