COMPLIMENTARY LUNCHEON.
MR CHARLES TODD ENTERTAINED,
A farewell luncheon was tendered at Auckland on Tuesday afternoon to -Mr Charles Todd, of Dunedin, at the banquetting room of the Fanners’ Trading Co., Auckland, on the eve of his departure on a trip to England and America- Ine Hon. George Fowlds presided, and on his left was the Archbishop of Now Zealand (Ur Averill) and on his right Bishop Robert Lewis Paddock. Bishop Cleary sent a very cordial message. . There was a largo and representative attendance, which the Chairman referred to as a gathering of friends interested in this groat tight against the liquor traffic. ‘ Ihe lion. Mr Fowlds referred to the great work Mr Todd had done for the cause, and also mentioned him as one of the driving forces of the Exhibition. Bishop Paddock, of Oregon U.S.A., was given a most cordial welcome. In reply, he said ho was bom in New York and worked there for years. Ho gave an illuminating sketch of old saloon days and of the amazing change that came with prohibition. Mr Todd said h e was proud to be president of the forces which would make hew Zealand dry. The fierht for the abolition of the liquor traffic was focussing and coordinating the Christian spirit in all denominations. and the end would be victory beenuso the cause was right. He referred to the special educational efforts being made by the alliance He referred to the fact that there was no liquor bar within half a mile of the Exhibition, yet this had been a centre of throbbing interest and fun. On a population basis the attendance at the Exhibition had been ten tunes greater than at Wembley.
