CENSUS RETURNS.
ADDITIONAL FIGURES. DRIFT TO THE TOWNS REVEALED. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 9. Further census returns show that th« population of Whangarei has increased from 4000 to 6266 Ashburton has a population of 5031. but the area has been reduced since the last census, and the increase ie only 256. Other figures are as follow:—Te Arofca, 2274—an increase of 165; Foiton, IK>6; Fseroa. 1733; Marton, 2721; Kaiapol, 1706; . Motueka, 1475; Winton, SSB; Ohakune, 1619; Thames, 4658—a decrease of 107; Tauransa, 2520; Pukekohe, 2307—an increase of -116; Cambridge, 2021—a decreaee of 44; Otaki, 1305; Stratford, 3326—an increase of 341; Taihape, 2398 —an increase of 295; Te JLuiti, 2313; Waitara, 1715; Balclutha, 1542; Tern nk’a, 1840; and Riverton, 868. In all the cases rot specially mentioned the increase is slight The census so far appears to show that the drift from the country to the towns sti 1 * continues.
