SPORTING.

RACING AND TROTTING. May 13, 15. —Egmont E.C. winter. May 15.—North Canterbury R-C. autumn. May 20, 21.—Ashburton County R.C. autumn. May 20, 22.—Wanganui J.C. winter. May 22.—Gamaru T.C, June 1,3, S.—D.J.C. winter. June 3, s.—Otaki Maori R.C. winter. June 3, 5. 7.—Auckland R.C. Some Interesting work took place at Wingatui on Saturday morning, ami the going on the inside grass is much firmer than what might he anticipated after the recent rainfall. Pink Note and Eaton Bells got through j useful work. Boncna and Vogue were allotted easy tasks, and then Tholomon and galloped half a mile in 54. Brightling 'and a Balboa gelding broke away from the five-furlong mark and reeled off the distance in 1.10. They caught up on Last Part and Marmont, who were going Saif a mile. The quartet came on in close company, with Brightling at the tail of the bunch. Brightling moved up towards the finish. It was a ussful working gallop between them. Adjutor, 'who is on the improve, got through useful striding exercise. Loughrea bowled along over a couple of circuits, and Overdrawn and Circulation did fairly strong work. Mantua cantered a lazy easy-going circuit, but when livened up led Clutha and Taboo over five furlongs in 1.8 2-5. Taboo seems to have lost punch, and finished several lengths away. General Advance and Beauty Light were schooled over four flights of hurdles, and each shaped well, with the former apparently waiting on the novice. Ravenna and Miss Winkle covered the last six of seven furlongs in 1.23 1-5, both finishing well. Pamplona, who has been suffering from corns, seems right again, and did good pace work, and a similar task was allotted Palencia. Matatua, Coastguard, Tione. Roman Archer, Fulmar, Kipling, Angelo, and a few others go through unimportant tasks. Cartoon and Galaxy were schooled over fences, and shaped well. Cartoon, however, seemed to blind Galaxy at the stand double, and the latter slipped up when landing over the first fence. He. afterwards crossed the double without trouble. , There are a number of youngsters at work on the Wingatui tracks, and the fact suggests that far more than usual interest will be aroused in the early two-year-old events nest season. The Tractor—Jada two-year-old has been placed in T. Metcalfe’s, charge in order to have him sharpened up a bit. W Lloyd has secured a lease of a fine well-grown filly rising three years old got by Roval Stag from Kiltess. She is green at present, but looks a rather likely sort. Good progress is being made with the improvements which are being earned out at Wingatui. . . .. At the monthlv meeting of the committee of the Riverton Racing Club (says our own correspondent) the president (Dr Gordon) brought fodward the question of providing a gold cup to be added to the Riverton Cup stakes at Easter 1927. It was unanimously decided to purchase a cup to the value of 100 guineas, the stake money not to be reduced. The chairman and Messrs A. E. Willett, Frank Trail, and L. R. Jordan were deputed to arrange the purchase. A remarkable feature of the W aikato Racing Club’s meeting was the fact that every winner on the second day carried top weight. This must surely be a record in top-weight successes. The fact that file of the winners on the second day had been successful on the first day of the meeting was also a striking coincidence. Followers of form should have profited by the results at the meeting. Notwithstanding the protests made last year by some of the delegates and the undertaking that was given by the president of the Trotting Conference that every endeavour would be made to avoid a clashing of dates, the annual meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference has again been fixed to be held on the same day as the New Zealand Racing Conference, the date being Wednesday, July 7. The Racing Conference date was announced a week before that of the Trotting Conference, so the responsibility must rest (says the Wellington Post) with the latter body. The clashing of the meetings of these two bodies means considerable inconvenience to those delegate s who are appointed to act at both conferences, and the selection of another date should surely have presented no insuperable difficulties. There is plenty of time yet for a little reason to prevailThe practice of some judicial committees in the Auckland district of cautioning jockeys for interference seems to be wrong. They have to suspend a jockey (says the Auckland Star) even if it is only for one race. The rule clearly states: “A horse may be disqualified for a race even if such horse or any horse belonging to the same owner . . . jostle another horse or the jockey of another horse in the same race, unless it is proved that the jostle was wholly caused by the fault of some other jockey, or that the jostled horse or his jockey was partly in fault. The jockey of any such horse shall be punished by the stewards by suspension from riding.” The Paper Money gelding Credit is again in wodk at Riccarton. Charlatan has beep sent north to fulfil engagements at the winter cross-country meetings. He will be, contrary to previous statements, steered by E. Shaw, and gees north in charge of F. C. Porter. The hurdler Te Kaiva i s again in workIt is interesting to note that nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting have already come to hand. The Auckland District Committee has issued a circular to racing clubs under its jurisdiction, giving the correct procedure in the event of a race having to be divided, and if the instructions are followed there should be no difficulty in the future. Briefly, a field of thirty-three horses is set out. and two of them are owned by the same owner. Further, it is assumed that there are onlv twenty-four spaces on the totalisator. The bracket is put on the two horses which race in the same interest, and then.- starting at the bottom the horses are coupled in pairs until thev will fit in the twenty-four spaces. In other words, from seventeen (inclus ; ve) onwards the horses are bracketed. Then the whole of the horsas are numbered consecutively, irrespective of brackets, and the odd numbers go in one division and the even numbers in the other division. In addition, the circular refers to the division of races in those cases where there arc eight events provided on the original programme, and increasing the prize-money, as well as allotting second and third prizes in these divisions. The District Committee looks on such a procedure as bmng distinctly opposed to the rules, which provide that no programme, once anpro ,- ed by a district committee, shall be altered without, their authority. In cases of races in divisions. where it is illegal to operate the totalisator on each division, only the winning horse in each division share in the prize-monev. the two winners taking the whole of the stake payable to the placed Itodses. ,in eo’-al shares, and no other stake money shall be payable.

AMBERLEY RACES. FRESCO WINS THE CUP. (From Our Special Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH. May 9. The Amberley Racing Club’s meeting, which was held at Riccarton on Saturday, was a great success in every way. A dull morning gave place in the afternoon to bright sunshine, and the sporting com munity turned out in strong force, there being a very large attendance. It was a speculative crowd, the totalisator investments being £21,059 10s, compared with £9165 10s a year ago, when the meeting was held at Amberley. Financially, the club will get a substantial lift. From a racing point of view, too, it was a good day. The fields for the galloping events were larger than usual, while the two trotting events drew even more starters than were necessary. Throughout the day the racing was firstclass, there being some very close finishes. The following are the results; BRACKENFTELD tvELTER HANDICAP, Of lOOsovs. One mile. B—Mr8 —Mr H.
