GENERAL NEWS.

The monthly meeting of the Forhury School Committee was held in the school rooms, all members being present. The roll number was 710, and the attendance GBO, Ihe percentage being 91.9. A portion of the school was affected by colds and whooping cough. The school doctor visited tho school and found that everything was satisfactory. The sum of X 29 19s 8d was deposited in the savings bank for the month. The visiting committee reported visiting the school, and said that everything was in fair order, except the playground around the infant room. The Education board was experimenting on some asphalting work, and it would soon be completed The band membership stood at 31. It is intended shortly to hold concerts and street parades. On Wednesday evening the quarterly meeting of tho Hotel and Restaurant Union was held in the Trades Hall. Mr Trimnell presided, and there was a very fair attendance of members. The secretary reported on the recent Hotel and Restaurant Federation Conference and tho Conciliation Counci* meeting, held in Wellington, at the latter of which a comnlete agreement with the employers had "been readied. Messrs Fred Jones and James Saunders addressed (lie meeting with a view to obtaining the unions re-affiliation with tho Otago Labour Representation Committee, and it was unanimously decided to re-affiliate. To increase further the union's activities, an assistant organise! (Mr Robt. C. Smith) was appointed to assist the secretary. At the Hibcrian Social Club rooms, Mon day evening last was devoted to impromptu speaking. The attendance was large and a lengthy list of subjects was submitted for tho opinions of the various speakers. These were treated intelligently and interestingly, and several of the members showed that the practise in speaking whirh they are gaining by participation in the literary side of the chib’s activities is giving them great fluency and facility in expressing their ideas The club is being improved gradually, and reading tables with the latest periodicals and magazines have been recently provided for the use of the members. Card tournaments are held at frequent intervals, and the billiard tables retain their popularity.
