LAWN TENNIS

NEW SOUTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIPS.

ANDREWS REACHES THE FINAL. BRILLIANT VICTORY OVER WILLARD. (Pre» Association —By Telegraph —Copyright.) SYDNEY, April 20. (Received April 20, at 11.30 p.m.) The New South Wales lawn tennis championships were continued to-day in fine bright weather. One of the best games of the day was the conclusion of the semi-final of the men’s singles championship between Andrews and Willard who was runner-up at this year’s Australian championships. The score in this game was 6—3, 3 —2 in favour of Andrews on Saturday, when rain compelled a postponement until to-day. Andrews took the first three games to-day, winning the second set 6 —2. In the next set Andrews went to pieces, his driving being too strong, and Willard, by clever anticipation, captured the set 6—l. In the final set, Andrews gave a brilliant exhibition and had vVillard hopelessly outclassed, taking the set to love. This was Andrews’s best exhibition. He will meet Kalms in the final to-morrow. The scores were : 6—3 ; 6—2, I—6, 6 —o. In the semi-finals of the junior singles between Hopman and Wilson the former won 6—l, 15 —13. Hopman was playing well at the commencement and he improved as the game progressed. Wilson seemed to be off colour in the first set, but he made a much better shewing in the second. He held the odd game from 7 —6 to 13—12, but could not press _ his advantage home. Hopman was playing brilliantly and his excellent service and fine volleying at the net enabled him to take the next three games and the set. In the second semi-final of the junior singles, Andrews had much the better of the first set, Crawford not taking a game. Crawford was playing below his usual form. He made some excellent strokes in the second set, but again Andrews showed his superiority in all departments of the game, though he was inclined to put too much power behind drives. He took the match s—o>5 —0> 6—4. DAVIS CUP COMPETITION. OTTAWA. Auril 19.
