BOYS’ SPORTS BANQUET. An enjoyable function was held on Saturday night in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium when a largo crowd of boys assembled to pay homage to the spirit of sport and sportsmanship. The gathering took the form of a banquet, the tables representing various sports and pastimes. The hall presented a gay spectacle and gave a carnival atmosphere to the function The largest table was that which displayed in lilliputian form the joys of outdoor life, entitled "camping out.” Swimming was demonstrated bv a large mirror, which gave the appearance of a placid lake with sandy banks and shore. Field athletics found expression in an elevated table that typified a grobn enclosure with a galaxy of performers who were made to jump hurdles and participate in the various field events. A green playing area, surrounded by a wicket fence provided the ground for two elevens who were wedding the willow and chasing the leather. The decorative scheme was in the hands of Mr J. Ledgerwood. The chairman, Mr E. H. Lough, announced that this was the opening function to launch the winter’s programme of work. He also stressed the value of sport, not only from a physical viewpoint, but from the character-building angle. There was a demand for men who could play hard but clean. Mr Adair, the director, referred to the development of the work and the prospects for another successful year. Plans were under way for 30 clubs, embracing 400 boys. . The address of the evening was given by the Rev. E. O. Blamires. who spoke >f the value of working while you work and playing while you play.” The . veteran cricketer was received with enthusiasm. Captain Anderson spoke to the boys of the rich heritage they had in the British Empire. He urged them to be worthy members of this great Empire bv playing the game. ______
