TWO NARROW CALLS. GEAR FAILS TO ANSWER. (Pbk United Press Association.) NELSON, April 12. Mr S. Winn and family had a miraculous escape from serious injuries while motoring down the Kohatu side of Spooner s Range yesterday. The brakes suddenly gave way at a steep bend on the steen hillside, and the car shot ahead at a great rate. Mr Winn endeavoured to engage tho lower gear, but failed. The car negotiated several dangerous bends at the high speed of almost 40 miles an hour. Mr Winn decided to ditch the car, and this was done successfully, considering the circumstances. The car. which was upset and considerably smashed, remained on the road. The passengers were thrown out, sustaining only flesh wounds. Within 10 minutes of the accident a North Island touring party came along with a first-aid outfit, which proved very valuable. HUNDRED FOOT FALL. ONLY THE CAR HURT. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 12. A car driven by Mr Davidson, of Rawhiti terrace, went ever a steep hillside, and fell about 100 ft. In trying to avoid a collision with another car it mounted a kerb, and crashed through a fence at the side of the Kelburn viaduct. Mr Davidson managed to keep it on its wheels, and it did not overturn till it reached the bottom. He, with his wife and sen, escaped with bruises. The place is regarded as dangerous, as the view is obstructed by fences.
