OBITUARY.
MR H. C. TEWSLEY. (Fsom Oub Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, April 7. Mr H. C. Tewsley, whose death, at the age of 68 years occurred suddenly last evening, was well-known in Dunedin. Mr Tewsley was born in Melbourne in March, 1858, and arrived in Dunedin as a bov of five years of age. He was educated at Halliweli s School and the Otago Boys High School. In 1874 he entered into the employment of Messrs Sargocd, Son, and Ewen in Dunedin, and gained experience in the different sections of the business. He was transferred to Auckland as counting house manager for the firm in 1887, and remained in that city till 1906. when be was promoted to the charge of the Wellington branch of the firm. About the same time the firm was converted into a company, of which Mr Tewsley became a director. lie retained this position for five years, at the end of which time he retired from the company, returning to Auckland tc enter into business on his own account. For many years Mr Tewsley was a member of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, and was chairman of the Auckland Railways League for a number of years, tie was also for several years a member of the Parnell Borough Council. He was identified with the Veterans’ Home from its inception and also with ttie Auckland branch of the Navy League. Mr Tewsley was a member of tlie executive of two Auckland exhibitions and of the Wellington industrial fair. He was also vice-president of the United Commercial Travellers’ Association of New Zealand as well as the first vice-president of the New Zealand Society of Accountants He unsuccessfully contested the Waitemata seat in the House of Representatives in the Liberal interest at the general election in 1914. In recent years Mr Tewsley took little part in public affairs. He has been secretary of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce for the past eight or nine years. A keen interest L, sport was always displayed by Mr Tewsley. He was for many years vice-commodore of the St. George’s Rowing Club, and at the time of his death he was vice-patron of the club. He was an old Otago volunteer, having been a member cf the B battery as well as a member of the Southland Hussars. Mr Tewsley married Miss Ada Kemjthorne, eldest daughter of the late Mr T. W. Kempthorne, of Dunedin. Mrs Tewsley, two sons, and one daughter, all resident in Auckland, survive him. Tlje sons are Mr Neill Tewsley and Mr Spenser Tewsley, and the daughter is Miss Doris Tewsley.
