The trouble with the crew which detained the Richardson steamer Mako in port since Monday night has been settled to the satisfaction'of the parties concerned, and the vessel will sail for Portland tonight. Charged with being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car, Edgar James Lcwrie, aged 35, was fined £lO and his licence was suspended for six months. The accused's car with a taxi and then with another car. During the hearing of the case counsel for the accused said he thomrht there should be some uniformity in the penalties imposed in these cases. WELLINGTON, April 7. The Hon. J. A. Young, Minister cf Health, stated to-day that the department was now investigating the statistical position regarding surgical operations in the Dominion. Besides local and Australian applications for the position of town clerk and engineer there are no fewer than 155 to come from England and Canada. Some of the applicants are known to be of high quality. CHRISTCHURCH, April 7. Eric Donald Ross, a law clerk, was charged this morning with the theft cf £2OO from a woman client and was remanded for a week, Thomas Alan Fleming, need 28 years, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment on a charee of driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
