Dumini, Volpi, and Povermo were sentenced to five years eleven months in connection with the Matteotti murder.—A. and N.Z. Cable. Signor Giacomo Matteotti, a Socialist member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, who was believed to be in possession of incriminating documents disappeared from his home in Rome on June 10, 1924. Suspicion of foul play immediately arose, and became a certainty within 48 hours. He had been kidnapped and murdered. Two persons, Filippo Filipelli, and Amerigo Dumini were arrested and both made statements in which they imeriminated persons in high office. This led to several other .rrests. On June 24. Signor Mussolini made a powerful speech to the Senate, in which he denounced the deed and its perpetrators. He announced condign penalties, and promised stringent measures to restore constitutional order in the_ country. Signor Mussolini secured in the Upper House a vote of confidence by 225 votes to 21, with six abstentions.
