NEW ZEALAND TRAVELLERS.

IMPESSIONS OF THE CONTINENT. (From Odb Own Correspondent.) LONDON, February 9. Mr and Mrs J. Wyndham Hopkins (Hamilton) and tneir two daughters arrived from the Continent last week, where they have been since November 17. They visited Paris, various -parts of the Riviera, the Her r.ese Oberland, and Munich. They had been warned that the populace in tips German town were suffering , ard times. Mr Wyndham Hopkins, who took pains to investigate the matter, found no outward indication of poverty or distress. During the week he was in Munich lie saw not a single beggar. He saw relief gangs clearing the streets of snow, but the men appeared to be fairly well clothed and not in that absolutely destitute condition in winch some people arc seen in the London streets. Prices in Germany were slightly in excess of those in England, whereas in France, even in such places as Nice, prices appeared to be 5!! per cent, cheaper than in England Pensions, which include all meals, can be obtained for the equivalent of Gs Sd a day. A similar hoard and lodging in London would cost 12 s a day. It was significant to notice the intense interest with which the French people scanned the news regarding the financial situation. Bulletins posted in prominent positions on the Rivera attracted a crowd of people every hour of the day. Mr Wyndham Hopkins mentioned that the Germans ore frequenting (he Italian Riviera in large numbers, but they cross the French frontier in smaller numbers. Mr Wyndham Hopkins and his family are leaving for South Africa on February 20. They will spend some months visiting all the larger centres of the Union, and will also stay in Rhodesia for some weeks, r. "terwards proceeding to New Zealand, which they should reach towards the end of the year.
