OTAGO EXPANSION LEAGUE.
The monthly meeting of the executive committee of the Otago Expansion League was held on Wednesday evening, and was attended by Messrs S, B. Macdonald (president), 'P. R; Sargood, Captain Sundstrum, L. D. Ritchie, V. Jacobs, and E. Tamblyn. Apologies were received from Mr James Horn, M.P., Mr Charles Todd and Mr 11. Inglis Wright. Amongst the correspondence received by the secretary and submitted to the committee were two letters from different parts of Scotland asking for information in regard to the prospects of settlement in New Zealand, each correspondent prefacing his request with the statement that he was emboldened to do so by reading the League advertisement in the Christmas Number of the Otago Witness. The committee expressed its satisfaction at such direct results and the secretary will reply in due course. Another request which unfortunately the League could not grant was one for a series of scenic slides for the purpose of illustrating lectures to he given in England. The League has from time to time supplied sets of views, but there are always wanted bv someone else and no stock is held. An interesting report was read from the agent appointed by the South Island Leagues in Auckland for the purpose of deflecting some of the tourist traffic there to the South Island. This venture seems to be making headway and as time progresses the results should begin to be visible. A report on the conference held regarding the Island fruit question and the progress made towards receiving more regular and direct supplies was tendered by the president and secretary who were thanked for their attention and their action was approved. The forthcoming Highways Conference with representatives of local bodies and the Otago Motor Club was discussed and the delegates, Messrs S. B. Macdonald, E. Tamblyn and W B Steel, were instructed as to the policy which in the opinion of the executive would he most desirable The conference of South Island Leagues which will be held in Dunedin early in April engaged the attention of memhe’s and the remits to be considered were fullv discussed The arrangement of the details in connection with the reception of the representatives was handed over to the president and the secretary It was resolved to write to Sir James Parr congratulating him upon his appointment ns High Commissioner and to express the hope that the relations between the League and the Commission’s office, so helpful during Sir James Allen’s regime, would continue. The subject of the rebuilding of the post office was also introduced and the necessary steps will he taken to keep the question in the forefront of matters requiring attention.
