VESSEL TOUCHES A ROCK.
NO APPAEENT DAMAGE. (Per United Press Association.) NELSON, March 25. While on the voyage from Lyttelton to Nelson early yesterday morning daring very bad weather, the Anchor Company’s steamer, Alexander, grazed a rock off Nine Pins, near Chetwode Island, at the mouth of Pelorug Sound during a heavy rain squall which obscured the visibility. It was found that the vessel was close up to the lighthouse on Nine Pins rock. The engines were immediately reversed, but on going astern the vessel grazed the rocks. She remained afloat, and. after ascertaining that there was no leak, the voyage to Nelson was resumed, that port being reached at 7.15 a.m. A Customs inquiry was held, and the vessel examined by the local surveyor. It was found that she had suffered no apparent damage, and she resumed her usual running.
