DUNEDIN GARDENING CLUB.
The Dunedin Gardening Club met on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance. The president (Mr Hollingworth), before starting the business, referred to the club’s success at the Exhibition Show, and thanked all those who had assisted so generously in the matter. He then gave a short address on the laying down of lawns, and pointed out that March was the best month of the year for the purpose. He emphasised the necessity for the proper preparation of the land. Draining, trenching, manuring, and cultivation -were just as necessary for lawns as for any other garden crops. The surface had to be made firm by treading and rolling before sowing the seed, which must be of the best. Mr J. Passmore spoke on the cultivation of the gladioli, and referred at length to some of the best varieties, including the growing of them for exhibition. Mr J. Whyte spoke on the cultivation of the, dahlia, explaining the various types and their cultivation, and he gave some valuable hints on their cultivation. There were on exhibition some very fine flowers. Mr L. Fraser showed sweet peas which would have been a credit to any show board. • Mr Holmes showed a few fine spikes of gladioli, and Mr MTntyre some blooms of lapageria alba, and Mrs Kennedy gooseberries; there were also exhibited roses, carnations, and dahlias. Mr F. H. Hollingworth presided over the meeting.
