AMUSEMENTS.

OCTAGON THEATRE. Another large audience witnessed the demonstration of the da Forrest phono-lilm last evening at the Octagon Theatre. Ur de Forrest has shown beyond question that a great avenue has been opened up by the invention of the speaking film. The synchronisation of movement and sound is perfect, but it must bo stated that the quality of the human voice and the finer gradations of music are as yet lacking.. The film comprises an introductory speaking picture of Dr de Forrest, an Egyptian dance, “Cohen on the Telephone,” and “A Little tilt of Nonsense,’’ in which piano and banjo players demonstrate the musical possibilities of the invention. In supports is the Master comedy, “Hold Your Breath,” featuring Dorothy Devore, Walter Hiers, Tully Marshall, Jimmy Adams, Priscilla Bonner, and Jimmie Harrison. The Octagon Concert Orchestra, under the baton of Mr Arthur Neate, provides an excellent musical programme. EMPIRE THEATRE. The top-liner on the current programme at the Empire ia the William Fox feature, “Kentucky Pride.” Five famous racehorses are introduced into this stirring drama of the turf, Man o’ War, Negofol (a French Derby winner), Fair Play, MTarvich, and The Finn comprise this quintet of champions. The story - deals with the visciaaitudes through which Virginia’s Future, a royally bred filly, passes and, with the fortunes of Beaumon', her owner. In the finish it is Virginia’s Future’s daughter, Confederacy, who redeems the family fortunes. There ia a strong supporting programme, and the Empire Grand Orchestra provide a good musical programme.
