PALMERSTON-WAIHEMO SHOW.

A COMPREHENSIVE DISPLAY. KEEN COMPETITION SHOWN Enthusiasm and competition were not lacking at the Paimertson-Waihemo A. and P. Society’s Show yesterday. The catalogue was more comprehensive than that of almost any other county organisation in Otago. The entries, too, were excellent as regards numbers and quite a good average standard of quality was displayed. Ihe day dawned fine and warm, and there was soon a large crowd of visitors on the show grounds. 'Hie management of details and the judging wore carried out with exceptional despatch and the president (Mr W. B, Galloway), the vice-president (Mr D. J. Ross), with the secretary (Mr A. M‘\A illiam)," and his willing band of stewards and marshals are to be congratulated tor the successful maimer in which the events were got off. . Most sections wore well contested, though in a few, such as the merinos, shorthorns, and draughts, to some extent, one exhibitor scooped the pool. The society greatly missed the exhibits of several well-known breeders in North Otago, such as Mr J. M. Smith, of Kakanui, and Mr J. Birtles, who has recently disposed of his Cherry Farm property. Still, despite a few notable absentees, interest and competition were there, and it can safely be asserted that the Palmerston Show this year has held its own with any of its class in the province. CATTLE. Among the Ayrshires there were some good types. Messrs I). Reid, D. Ireland, and M. Tubman repeated their successes at Waikouaiti and Waitati, with some good anima'S It would appear from the stock shown that there is 100 much close breeding and not enough culling- Instead of a good, high average, there are very good and very bad in the district. The Shorthorn display came from the well-known Bushey Park stud belonging to Mr J. A. Johnstone. This exhibit, though mooting with no opposition, was an asset to the show, as it provided farmers with an opportunity of viewing the latest development in fat cattle raising. All those animals, many of which combined two of the finest strains in Scotland, wore fine specimens of the “baby lieef” type, now in demand all over the world. Short-legged, stock! ly built, with a body almost rectangular in shape and maturing early, these animals and the typo they represent are the class of Shorthorn beef cattle now being adopted all over the world. Otago fanners in general do not appear to have grasped the significance of this trend. The Jerseys were typical of the breed, ami in some oases were particularly good. Mr D. Wright showed some good stuff, and took the majority of the prize-money. The females were a much belter bunch than the males. Messrs Nicolson Bros., of Hampden, wore ngairi the premier black and white exhibitors, and by the quality of their entries de served their successes. Mr T. Hewitt ran a good second, but bis stock did not show the typo and breeding of the .Hampden cattle. Another outstanding exhibit was hat, of Messrs M'Donald and Go., whoso bull wias-so nearly the equal of the Hampden champion that the judge was constrained- to award him a reserve, championship. 1 The fat cattle exhibit was a good criterion of the county’s resources as regards fodder. Tho animals wore particularly well brought out, and wore admirably adapted to tho butchers’ purposes. The crossbred dairy cow section was unaccountably weak, there being but a few stray entries. SHEEP. The sheep pens attracted a good deal of attention and were certainly a feturc of the show. Tho whole of the merino display was provided by Mr George Boss, who sent in a bunch of good sheep, with a few exceptional animals. The majority, however, indicated a failure to realise the necessity for heavy culling, and building up of type. Every lamb should not be kept for ■ the flock. A blemish of any sort should exclude it, as the standard is soon lo vac rod- by a few had specimens. The Corriod.rle section was more or less a triumphal march for the Bushey, Park stud of Mr J. A; Johnston©. -Many of those animals gained championship honours at the Royal Show, and were almost perfect specimens of a breed which is gaining increasing favour as a dual purpose typo among breeders all over New Zealand. These lengthy, low-lovel, deep and wide sheep certainly were a treat to watch. The Ross brothers made a bold bid for honours in these classes, and were not unsuccessful with several outstanding entries. Tho Border Loiccsters were not as promising as some other sections. The characteristics of th© breed wore there to some extent, and in a pronounced degree in some animals, but generally speaking the average quality was lower than it ought to be in a district so eminently suited to sho©p breeding as tho Waihomo Cou n t y. Mr C. F. Overton’s Romney Marsh sheep were worthy of attention. In tho whole of this brooder’s entry was a uniformity of type and constitution that appealed to tho eye. The other outstanding exhibition in these classes was Mr David Rosa, who showed some good animals and ran Mr Overton very oloso far all Ins awards. Tho crossbred sections were scarcely worth}’ of mention, there being about half a dozen. 'There wore some fine fat sheep in the pens coming from the farms of J. Reid, P. J. Callaghan, and the Bushey Park EstatoTIORSES. Unlike most Otago shows this season, the horse display was on the weak side. In the Clydesdale classes, as has been said, there wore some, notable absentees. Tho most successful exhibitor was Mr J. A. Johnstone, of Bushey Park. His Clydesdales were as good as his other entries, and his awards .were well-earned. Tho special prizes and trophies were all annexed by this owner. The standard of quality was' not high, and with the exception of tho Pushoy Park stock, and one or two isolated entries, tho quality could almost be termed weak. Mr D. Ross bad a particularly nice brood mare with foal at foot, while some of tho animals shown by Mr W.' R. Wedge were good. "The thoroughbred sections lacked life. There wore only two animals, and neither was of outstanding merit. The ponies were many, and quite good. This is a section of shows which never seems to diminish. 'This is doubtless due to the enthusiasm of the small fry. Hie liackneys produced some keen competition 'and some good quality. Mrs M‘Kay, Miss Greenslade, and a few others are to be congratulated for the consistency with which they follow up show after show ami keep tje interest in these sections alive. Mrs M'Kay and Mr Dan Ross wore the chief rod ticket winners yesterday. The horseflesh in general was of good quality, though there was a pronounced tail. This seems to bo a common fault in hackney shows. DwS. Waihemo was ever the home of “doggie men,” and the offering of working dogs was a credit to the district. The animals were all hatirtv animals, and of the variety which are worth 10 men to a sheep farmer. Tho judge must have had no easy task separating the winners. POULTRY. The poultry sod ions were not neglected. In live classes there wore sufficient entries to make exhibitors feel they bad not wasted their time showing their birds. Mrs 1). Wilson of Palmerston, took some red tickets.’and Mr R. Bryce won some honours. WOOI,. The wool show was a worthy one, tho stuff displayed being a Hue advertisement for the wool-growing facilities of tho district. This department created, a good deal of interest. . Perhaps the finest exhibit was that of J. Philip, who had some excellent 60-61 merino wool. However, tho standard was very high. DAIRY' PRODUCE. Hie menfolk of the society had plenty of entries forward, but, as is seldom Iho case, the feminine exhibitors were few. The’ butter sections were not keenly contested. though the quality was good. Many sections had no entrants. BAKING. hi the baking sections also tho womenfolk failed to line up to the reputation won by tlie country women of Otago. It is unusual for women’s cookery classes to lack competitors, but this was -more or less the case yesterday. Tho judge, however, was quite pleased with what she saw. though she would have liked a little more competition.
