AUSTRALIAN SILVER BAND.

There was a large attendance last evening at the second concert given by the Australian Silver Band in His Majesty s Theatre. The programme was again a diversified one. evidently compiled to meet the taste of everybody. That is a little point that is sometimes overlooked, and a point that counts for much. There n: nothing like making an entertainment popular and acceptable to all. xhe band opened with something very popular in the overture to “Poet and Peasant, which was exceedingly well treated, and evoked loud applause that did not cease until the hand prepared to play again. This time it gave in recognition oi the applause ‘‘Nearer, My Gfocl, to Ihee, and nothing more artistically played was heard during the concert. A selection trora Meyerbeer’s opera, “Dinorah,” was included amongst the distinctly classical music heard, and with it may he mentioned “Ten Minutes with Richard Wagner.” Both of these wore splendid.y played, and roused the audience to almost a pitch of enthusiasm. There was however, plenty of lighter music heard during the evening. “Jazz” was by no means omitted, and mot with a very cordial reception by “the house.” Mr Arthur Stender again pleased the audience with his cornet playing, and, like Mr Arthur Reid, the xylophonist, had some difficulty' in appeasing the appetite of those present in the matter of further contributions. A feature of Mr Reid’s playing was that, being blindfolded, he performed on the xvlophone just as well as if he had a clear vision of the instrument. Messrs A. Stender and George Robertson played a cornet duel, remarkably well. Another conceit will he given by the hand in His Majesty s Theatre this evening.
