ARMY OF OCCUPATION

GERMANY’S REPRESENTATIONS. BRITAIN TO REPLY. (Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, January 18. (Received Jan. 19, at 7.10 p.m.) Renter learns that the British Government is at present drawing attention to Germany’s representations regarding the number'of Allied troops in Rhineland, (with a view to suitably replying to the representations alter consultation- with the Franco-Belgian Governments. —Reuter. A cable message from Berlin, which appeared in our issue of Saturday last, stated that the news that the Allied army of occupation in the Rhineland still numbers 75,000 has aroused angry disappointment in Germany. The newspapers say that this fact is' a strange' commentary upon the spirit of the Locarno Pact, and they hope that the Government will give strong expression to the indignation, of the German people. An army of such a size makes it evident that the promises made at Locarno will not be fulfilled. TVTTSRTAUJED COMMISSION’S REPORT. SATISFACTORY PROGRESS RECORDED. BERLIN, January 18. (Received Jan. 19, at 7.10 p.m-) Regarded in the light of a German demarche (mentioned in a cable from Berlin which appeared in our issue of Saturday and which appears as a footnote to the immediately facing this), interest attaches to the periodical report of the Inter-Allied Military Control Commission, which has just been forwarded to Paris recording satisfactory progress in carrying' out the Allied demands concerning disarmament, and the fair progress made with regard to effectives. The date when the Commission will terminate its work depends on Germany’s willingness to settle a few points outstanding. —Reuter.
