LAWRENCE NOTES. (Thou Oor Owx Correspondent,) LAWRENCE, January 19. THE WEATHER. Real holiday weather has been experienced here since the New Year, and warm and sunny conditions have prevailed daily. This distract, however, soon shows the effect of hot weather, and a good rain would be welcomed. To date only ,46in of rain has fallen for the present month. The rainfall foe 1925 was 28.095 in, and for 1924 21.04 in. THE TOURIST TRAFFIC. The tourist traffic to this district, during the holiday season was quite equal to that of former years. The publicity; activities of the Progressive League in the direction of advertising helped in the encouragement of people to visit Lawrence. It has Veen quite, a surprise, considering the great attraction of the Exhibition, that so many visitors have been here. Visitors are lavish in their praise of the district as a holiday resort, and an excursion from Dunedin to Lawrence in the immediate future is likely to take place. THE FARMING OUTLOOK. The dairy sheep farmers up to the present have had a good season, although it was late in starting. Splendid feed, in fact the best for years, was grown, and it is doubtful if this district for this time of the year ever looked better. The shearing season is practically over, but in the weight, texture, and quality the wool is not so good as in former years, this being attributed to the six weeks’ wet weather in the beginning of the season. LAWRENCE BOROUGH COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday night in the Council Chambers, Mr Simpson (Mayor) presiding. It was decided to send a lettei: of condolence to the relatives of the lata Mrs Varcoe. ' An auctioneer’s license wag granted to J, B. Thompson on the usual conditions and Permission was granted to G. R. Talbov* to erect a water tap at the verandah in front of his display promisee. A letter was received from Mr A. Bw Speii-s, Mayor of Kumsra, extending sal invitation to the celebrations on March 1, 2, and 10 to commemorate the jubilee o£ the opening of the Kumara goldfields. The valuations for the ensuing year, as assessed by the borough vainer, were approved. Mr E, C. Mong was appointed dog tax collector, and all fees were authorised to be in bv the end of February. The 0:a irman of the Works Committee reported that all the principal streets had been cleared of noxious weeds, and the surfaceman was now busy clearing the sludga channel. It was decided to flush out the Hospital Creek during the hot weather. The Chairman of the Water Committee reported that the committee had decided to reduce the charge for special supplies of water by 25 per cent., subject to revision, at the end of March, when the present lease of the dam and water rights expire.——lt was decided to advertise warning the ratepayers Against waste of water during the dry weather. The position waa looked upon as serious, as 1,400,000 gallons and 1,520,000 gallons were consumed in November and December. It was decided to take action where persistent neglect and waste was detected. It was proposed to have Wednesday sa the statutory half-holidav for the borough, for the ensuing 12 months. The request of the hall caretaker for art increase of salary was referred to the finance committee to report. \ccounte amounting to £1317 were passed for payment. We would remind oar readers of H.
