AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
EVENING SPORTS MEETING. The Otago Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. held a short evening sports meeting at the Caledonian Ground last evening. Competitors were unfortunate in striking unfavourable conditions, a cold, bleak wind making running anything but pleasant. Half a dozen events were run off, the results being as follow :
75 Yards.—First heat (eight starters) : A. B. Bastings (2yds) 1, A. W. Duff (syds) 2, U. W. Lander (11yds) 3. Time, 8 l-ssec. Second heat (eight starters) ; C. Olsen (Iyd) 1, W. .1. Duff (syds) 2, G. Cox (13yds) 3.
Time, S l-ssec. Final : Cox 1. Bastings 2. Oisen 3. Cox finished well about two feet in front of Bastings, who beat Olsen by a foot.
Half-mile Cycle Handicap. Eight entries. —A. C. Wills (scr) 1. Moir (100yds) 2, Nicholson (15yds) 3. Time, SnUn 50sec. The field was fairly well bunched all the way, and finished dose together, with tho leader. Wills, the scratch man. about five lengths in the lead, Moir beat Nicholson by about two lengths.' 1000 Yards Handicap. Fourteen starters. —G. Willidon (455yds) 1, P. Rolfe (25yda) 2, E. Drown (scr) 3. Time, 2rain 33sec. Wtlliden's handicap gave him a good lead, which Rolfe just failed to make up. The winner won by about two yards. Brown, the scratch man, had a lot to make up, and he ran a good race, finishing a yard behind Rolfe.
Half-mile Walk Handicap. Three entries. —J. Wilson (scr) 1, P. Herum (15yds) 2, J. Cameron (20ycls) 3. Time, 3mln 22sec. Wilson won easily by about 15 yards. Ho soon made up the gap between the runners at the start, and, having passed the other two, set out to make god lime. Herum finished about 10 yards in front of Cameron.
Club Relay Race (half-mile, 440yds, and two 220yds).—Civil Service No. 2 ((ifiyds) 1 , A. W. Huffs teaan (Bsyds) 2, Civil Service No. 1 (scr) 3. Time, 3min 55 l-ssec. Brown took tho half-mile run for Civil Service No. 1 and was 65yds behind the other four teams. At tho end of tho distance he had made up little more than five yards of the lead the rest were given. Prom that point Civil Service No. 2 went on to win, increasing their lead with each relay. A. W. Duff’s team was second, 15 yards behind the winner. Civil Service No. 1 were 10 yards away third.
