PRISONER RECAPTURED.
SHORT-LIVED LIBERTY. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 19. Penc Kaiakaikore. the habitual criminal, who escaped from the quarry at Mt. Eden gaol yesterday, was recaptured to-day. Ho was seen entering a house in the Grey Lynn district. The police surrounded the whole block, and when he dashed out police and civilians followed, till he was overtaken in an open paddock. He offered no resistance. [When the alarm of his escape was given a largo party of warders set out the escapee. They were reinforced by five policemen from the citv station and officers from substations. Tnc trail led to the Domain, where Pene is reported to have been sighted. The area and its surroundings wore scoured, hut the Maori was not discovered. Later, however, he was seen further afield, going in the direction of Orakei. Pone was sentenced to two years’ hard labour and declared an habitual criminal in February, 1924. on charges of breaking. entering, and theft at Auckland.]
