CONCESSION TICKETS TO OPOHO.
TO THE EDITOR. ' Sir, —I have been requested by a number of Opoho residents to protest through the medium of the Otago Daily Times against the withdrawal of concession tickets from Frederick street to Opoho. \Vc a?*e told that the reason why tins concession has been stopped is because there is not sufficient demand for tickets. This “explanation” is hard to understand, because those who use the Opoho car know that invariably, at rush hours, quite a number of working people pet on the oars at Frederick street and tender concession tickets. As it stands now, with the concession for Frederick street withdrawn, it will coat workers and other residents more to reach their homes from Frederick street than it will cost those who travel the whole journey from the Exchange. Surely this cannot appeal to the tramway management ar> reasonable? Whilst writing I would direct attention to the fact that the Opoho line is the only one throughout the service on which the ordinary 14-rides for a shilling concession ticket cannot be used on the last section going home, or on the first section going to town. This means that the holder of an Opoho concession ticket, if desirous of breaking the journey, cannot resort to the 14j'ido concession ticket as lie can on every other route, but, must pay cash on the hill line. This, 1 would point, out, is not a. question so much of expenec to the traveller, as of convenience, and—may I Bay?—of lair dealing towards all sections of the community alike. It is with regret that attention is directed lo these matters because the privilege of tramway facility to Opoho is greatly appreciated by the residents, as the full cars (strap-hangers, frequently) testify. That the public generally also appreciates the advantage of tramway communication to our beautiful suburb is shown by the numerous visitors, and also by the great number of homes of good class that have already been built, arc being built, and are to be built, since the opening of the extension. How many of our new residents have bought houses at Opoho in the belief that the Frederick street concession ticket would be maintained 1 do not know.—l am ,etc M H, P. Harvey. J anuA-ry 14.
