CITY POLICE COURT.

Tuesday, October 27. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. For drunkenness, a first offender was fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. THEFT Henry Harold Turner, an Australian, was charged on remand with the theft of two table knives and one table fork, valued at 9s, the property of Guy Winter. —Accused pleaded guilty.—Senior-sergeant Quater.main stated that accused’s fingerprints had been sent to Wellington, but as yet no reply had been received. —Plain-clothes Constable Allsopp gave evidence to the effect that Turner had, since his arrival here, worked for the tramways department for a short period from August 17 to September 29, and that his mode of living had been to stay at a boarding-house for i short time and then depart, leaving his board unpaid. He had treated several boarding-house keepers in this fashion.— Accused, in defence, pleaded that when the theft took place he was under the influence of drink. —Senior-sergeant Quatermain : He can drink, your Worship, but he can’t pay his board. —The Magistrate said that, on the evidence of the police, it was plain that Turner was an undesirable, and ho sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment.
