RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the club rooms last evening. There was a full attendance of members. Mr P. S. Anderson presiding. One new member was nominated, and the transfer of two members was approved. One resignation was received. The question of a returned soldiers’ section at the Exhibition was discussed, and Mr H. L. Paterson (chairman of the committee set np to arrange an exhibit) reported progress. It was stated that the sale of the goods exhibited was not causing any anxiety. The scheme would be a success'if disabled soldiers kept up a good supply of manufactures. In connection with the profits from the sale of exhibits it was stated that the association would make nothing on the transactions. It was decided that 15 per cent, should be taken off the selling price to meet overhead expenses. Soldiers were to bo asked to set their own soiling price on the goods when consigning their exhibits. A suggestion that discretionary powers be given the committee was stated to bo impossible, but if any fictitious values wer6 placed on good? the only course open to the association was to draw the consignor’s attention to the fact that his goods would not sell at such a price and get his consent to’ make a reduction. Mr Anderson asked whether the association was not taking a risk in the event of all the goods not being sold. The expenses would have to be paid all the same. Mr Paterson replied that they estimated that at least £4OOO worth of goods would bo sold, and if that were so expenses would be covered easily. That was a very moderate estimate of the value of the goods. It was eventually decided to leave thn matter in the hands of the committee. . Another’ matter in connection with the Exhibition was that of the employment of returned men. —The Secretary reported that he had forwarded the name® of men considered suitable to take up positions in this way. The Exlfibition authorities had advised that a list of appointments wbuld be forwarded as soon as possible. -Some nominated men had been refused positions for no apparent reason, and a committee consisting of Messrs White, Tang, and Forrester was appointed to approach the secretary of the Exhibition in the matter. A request from the Otago Regiment {or financial assistance in its reunion svas referred to by the Finance Committee, which recommended that the money bo not granted. A further request that the services of the association secretary bo lent was refused, as the secretary was too busy at present. The President stated that it was desired to bring the reunion before the notice of all returned men, and he wished to dispel an erroneous impression that had got abroad to the effect that the function was being run by tho Officers’ Club for officers. It was for all members of the regiment.
