LOST IN MID-ATLANTIC
NORWEGIAN STEAMER ABANDONED. RESCUE OF CREW EFFECTED. Pr»s» Association—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, October 26. (Received Oct. 27, at 5.5 p.m.) The Norwegian steamer Elven, bound from Rotterdam to Sydney, which stood by for the purpose of rescuing the crew of the storm-stricken Italian freighter Ignazio Florio in mid-Atlantic last week, fell a victim to the same storm and was abandoned 1400 miles east of New York, according to a wireless message from the steamer American Trader. The latter vessel is bringing- to New York the crew of the Elven, which was left behind wilh her rudder smashed and her life-boats carried away. The United States liner President Harding rescued the crew of the Ignazio florio.—A. and N.Z, Cable.
The Italian steamer Ignazio Florio was abandoned sinking on October 21, after 27 of the crew had been removed by the President Harding, which stood by , all night unable to assist because of the high seas and a hurricane of wind. The Elven, a steel screw steamer of 4004 tons, was built at Glasgow in 1900. Her principal dimensions were: Length, 354 ft 3in; oreadth, 48ft lin; depth, 25ft Sin.
