JAPANESE STEAMER ON FIRE. SIX DEATHS REPORTED. CrM* Association—By Telegraph —Copyright NEW YORK, October 18. According to a message from Mayport (Ilorida), at least six pasengers are believed to have been drowned and many injured when the steamer Comanche, which left Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon for New York, was practically destroyed by firo six miles off the shore at night. The survivors were brought here by two vessels which effected the rescues in a heavy sea. —Reuter. TUG RUNS AGROUND. SEVEN OF CREW MISSING.
VICTORIA (8.C.), October 18.
A search is being conducted for seven men who are believed to have been drowned on Saturday night, when the tug Hope, which was engaged in salvage operations on the freighter Eomdyk, was stranded 10 miles west of Victoria and capsized, precipitating 42 members of the crew into the water. —Reuter.
