MANCHESTER UNITY.

Unemployment being' & serious factor in the Old Land, it naturally gave the M.W. considerable concern, inasmuch as many of its members suffered in consequence. Lodges throughout the land grappled with the members’ difficulties as far as their various funds permitted. Also at the time of the acuteet distress a voluntary Unity unemployed members’ contribution fund was established, some £3OO being received in donations. From time to time the directors, in response to appeals, made grants towards maintaining the contribution of those unfortunately unemployed. Many districts having found the volume ot unemployment beyond their power to remove adequately they made the maintenance of the Unity fund a necessity. The balance being very low', the directors were empowered to keep the fund going for some further period and give this phase of philanthropic work their close attention. An official visit to Loyal Mosgiel Lodge was paid by a party of town brethren, several city lodges being represented. Prov. G.M. Bro. A. Wylie also was in attendance. After a hearty welcome had been extended bv the N.G.. P.G. Bro. A. Cameron led a musical programme with a characteristic song. Songs were rendered by Bro Peter Wallace, and an instrumental item was given by Bro. Pullen, and a recitation by Bros. Geard, Robson, and Bond. Some amusing stories were also told by P.G. Bros. G. and M. Hendry. Responses were made to the visitors’ toast by P.G. Bro. E. Nidd Oiitram (Loyal Caversham), who drew special attention to the opening of a ladies’ lodge in their district on November 3 Prov. G.M. Bro. A. Wylie outlined the work of the executive and spoke words of encouragement and advice to those present, urging close attention to several matters that would come before them shortly. A pleasant half hour spent over an excellent supper dosed an enjoyable evening. Loyal Albion Lodge met at Stuart Street Hall. N.G. Bro. T. White presiding. One candidate was initiated It was reported that one of the lodge’s most energetic members, P.G. Bro. W. Stewart, had met with a serious accident. The news was received with great regret but gratification was expressed that the brother was now making good progress towards recovery. A social evening was held, the lodge entertaining its lady friends at a dance. Some 30 couples attended, the function proving m every way successful. Music of a high Of**®* was supplied by Kennedy and Edwards .Haremai” Orchestra. P.G. Kennedy and assistants were as usual well to the fore in providing an excellent supper. Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge (Port Chalmers) held a well-attended meeting N.G. •Bro. G. G. Macdonald in the chair. Routine business only was dealt with, the reports of delegates to district meetings being allowed to stand over. Complimentary reference was made to the work Per. Sec. Bro. W. Johnstone had done in preparing matter for the advocacy of a hospital fund. His correspondence embraced all the districts in the Dominion. A special vote of thanks was accorded Bro. Johnstone, who, in reply, intimated his intention of laying the proposal before a meeting at Caversham at an early date. A social dance, the proceeds of which are to be devoted to the Christmas Tree Fund, was held, some 90 copules being in attendance. E. Sec. Bro. E Brown and Bro. W. Parker provided excellent music, and dancing was indulged in until midnight. The lodge is indebted to the ladies, who provided an excellent supper. , _ , . Loval Roxburgh Lodge was honoured by a special visit from U.P.G.M. Bro. Clarke. His visit was much appreciated. Being invited to address the meeting. Bro. Clarke in a neat speech, reviewed the position of the lodge, and emphasised its importance in the district, complimenting it on its good work. He made kindly reference to the work of the young officers and urged them tb continued endeavour. PG. Bro T Michelle, on behalf of the lodge, thanked the D.P.G.M. for his visit, and words of encouragement.
