A NIGHT OF TERROR. THREAT TO SHELL A TOWN. fnu Association—By Taiegraph—CopyrucUt PEKING, October 16. Advices from Tsing-tao state that the city experienced a; night of terror, when two gunboats threatened to shell the city after their demand for pay (which is several months in arrears) had only been partly met. It was feared that the sailors, under cover of the ships' fire, would try to effect a landing and loot the city. The Consulates and the public buildings were heavily guarded. The military authorities sent an ultimatum to the gunboats to surrender. Negotiations are proceeding. —Reuter. POSITION AT SHANGHAI. OUTLOOK THREATENING. PROTECTION OF JAPANESE. PEKING, October 17. (Received October 18, at 5.5 p.m.) The Chang-Tso-lin forces have retreated to Nanking, Sun-Fiian-chang's forces following. After a few hundreds had been made prisoners a mandate was issued ordering Sun-Fuan-chang to withdraw from Shanghai, as the departure of Chang-Tso-lin's troops had removed the grievances that had been complained of. Two Japanese destroyers arc proceeding to Shanghai to protect the Japanese residents in view of the threatening situation. —Reuter.
