AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

OTAGO CENTRE MEETING. AN INTERESTING PROGRAMME. An Otago Centre Sports meeting—b fine day ! For some years past the local centre of the Now Zealand Amateur Athletic Association has been singularly unfortunate in the weather conditions during meetings. Time and time again, both during sports meetings and the running of the Otago Five Mile Championship, and the Edmond Cup Steeplechase, the weather has been showery, or heavy rain has fallen prior to the day of the event, making the track conditions more arduous than before. Even Saturday’s fine day was far from perfect for running and cycling, as the strong north-east wind which swept across the Caledonian Ground, was an added handicap to the competitors, and very unpleasant for the spectators, who numbered nearly 1000. An interesting programme was provided, and a number of exciting finishes were witnessed. The meeting was controlled by a capable group of officials under Messrs E. L. Macaseey (referee), and P. W. Breen (superintendent). The results were as follow: — TRACK EVENTS. 100 YARDS HANDICAP—First Heat: G. D. Wise (syds) 1, P. B. Levy (syds) 2; time, ]2seo. Second Heat: H. J. C. MKenzie (10yds) 1, R.
