The bout lacked excitement and was distinguished by much infighting. The referee, Mr Harold Baker (manager of the Now South Wales team), awarded the victory to Elmour, the decision being greeted with cheers and a counterdemonstration. The Poverty Bay and East Coast amateur champioaships were also contested, resulting as follows: —Feather-weight,. J, Torbitt; light, G. Fitzmaurico; welter, \V. Robertson; middle, J. Wright. A 15-round professional tight between “Dickie" Vercoo, 8.13 i (Marlborough), and “Derry” Clinton, 8.11 (Palmerston North), ended somewhat sensationally in the ninth round. From the first gong the battle was a shade hard and strenuous, the local man having the better of the exchanges. In the sixth round Vcrcoo had Clinton really gone on the ropes, twice, and the gong was welcome sound to the Palmerston North lad. Clinton made a good recovery and made things lively in the seventh and eighth rounds. In the ninth round both men were fighting fast, and just as the gong sounded Vercoe fell squirming. It did not appear as though Clinton had hit low with his hands, but apparently his knee had come into play inadvertently. The referee pronounced the fight over and after a conference with three doctors who examined Vercoe gave a decision against Clinton on a foul. Vercoo was lending on points at the time. In the preliminaries the defeat of the Wellington centre champion Satherley by a local amateur, Lea Hewitson, caused some surprise. Hewitson won ail the way. AT SYDNEY STADIUM.
