THE KENTS CARGO.
UNLOADING NEARLY COMPLETED. VESSEL UNDER REPAIRS. (Pee United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 12. The discharging of the damaged cargo from the steamer Kent is being carried on as speedily as possible. There are only a few hundred tons left in the lower hold of No. 2 hatch, where the fire occurred. Gangs were put on yesterday to discharge cargo from Nos. 1 and 3 holds. The cargo in these holds was only damaged by water. Where the fire was fiercest in No. 2 hold the iron beams and deck plates are badly buckled. This ironwork is being sent ashore to be straightened.- New plates are being fitted into the ship’s side whore holes wore out, and a large amount of repair work is being done to the insulation and fittings in the hold. It is hoped that sufficient progress will have been made by about the middle of next week to allow the Kent to take her departure for Wellington, if the strike is settled. There are now some hundreds of tons of the damaged cargo stocked in a shed on shore. A salvage sale will be held.
